The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing is an online source of information on culturally appropriate aged care. This resource has been developed to guide and promote best practice standards of care that address cultural diversity across all levels of service design and delivery.

PHRASE CARDS
These cards assist aged care providers in every day situations communicate with clients who speak little or no English when there is no interpreter present. Staff members can
either point to the appropriate phrase or read it aloud using the handy pronunciation guide.
Cards are A5 size, laminated and held together with a key ring. Each set consists of seven double-sided cards covering the following topics: greetings, food, personal care, and pain & requests.
The phrase cards are available in 11 languages:
CHINESE, CROATIAN, DUTCH, GREEK, ITALIAN, MACEDONIAN, POLISH, PORTUGUESE, SERBIAN, UKRAINIAN & VIETNAMESE

MY WORD – A COMMUNICATION AID KIT (BOOK & TAPE)
This kit is a collection of words and pictures to assist communication between staff and
residents of aged care facilities. Each Kit comprises a booklet and audiotape.

WORKING WITH INTERPRETERS – A KIT FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (VIDEO/ DVD AND NOTES)
This kit highlights the steps that need to be considered when engaging an accredited
interpreter for working with clients from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.
Case scenarios provide “real life” demonstrations of the correct way to conduct interviews when using an interpreter. This educational tool can assist health workers to feel confident when faced with need to use an interpreter to communicate with a client.

This publication was developed in consultation with ethnic communities’ and organisations.
This handbook is designed to assist aged care staff and health professionals provide culturally sensitive care to older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
