Older Carers' Program

This program has been suspended

Service Description

This service provides individualised support to Older Carers who have an adult child, with a permanent physical, mental or intellectual disability, and are concerned about who will look after their adult child when they are no longer able to. The service assists with care planning, information, social support and regular respite breaks to meet the needs of the carer.

Service Coverage

The aim of the program is to help older carers maintain their own well being while preparing for their child to continue receiving quality care and support in the future. This program assists in arranging respite for the older carer to take a much-needed break and is also able to guide and support older carers through the planning process of future care for their adult child.
The coordinator is able to guide you and your family in developing a case plan tailored to your family circumstances.
The older Carers program can assist with:

  • Planning for the future
  • Planning regular and flexible breaks
  • Linking carers to services they may need
  • Social support
  • Crisis management, and
  • Morning Teas to meet other carers

Who can we help (eligibility)

The program is available to parent/carers aged 65 years plus, (or 45 years plus for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders) caring for an adult child with a permanent disability or long-term illness.

Fees

Respite centres encourage carers to contribute towards the cost of respite services if they are able to. However, no person will be denied a respite service if they are unable to contribute.

Funding

The Older Carers Respite and Information Service program is funded by the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA).
